October and Halloween have always been a big deal in Benicia. Benicia Main Street has a month long Scarecrow Contest, the Haunted Depot starting on October 18th, and the Halloween Costume Contest and Sidewalk Stroll on Saturday October 26th.  Zeppelin Comics, a 4 year retail staple on H Street, hopes their Halloween offering will be a welcome addition to First Street’s activities. Enjoying their new location at 929 1st Street, Zeppelin Comics has expanded their selection of new comics to over 200 ongoing titles, along with thousands of graphic novels, statues, board games, and t-shirts. Owners Natasha and Dan Curtis opened the new store at 929 1st Street on August 10th, 2019, and brought their vintage aesthetic to an open and airy 1700 sq ft space.

In addition to the Halloween Costume Contest and Sidewalk Stoll, which attracts thousands of trick-or-treaters, Zeppelin Comics will be participating in Halloween ComicFest that day. Halloween ComicFest is a national event where comic book stores have special comic books to give out for free to readers of all ages. Zeppelin will also have a couple of comic book creators available for people to meet and get their books signed. Natasha reminded me that not every comic is about superheroes. Spooky October offerings include the Walking Dead, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, My Little Pony, Power Rangers and Teenage Mutant Turtles.

Both Natasha and Dan attend comic book conventions regularly, including Comic-Con in San Diego, WonderCon in Anaheim, and recently Rose City in Portland. They were also a founding sponsor for VacaCon in Vacaville. Conventions give them the opportunity to keep up with what is new in the industry and connect with creators to bring them to Benicia for locals to meet their favorite artists and writers. Their new store will be a perfect addition to the top of 1st Street.
