This month, Arts Benicia will host an eclectic exhibition in which twenty artists will participate. Entitled Order + Chaos, the work to be exhibited was juried by San Francisco gallerist Catharine Clark. Michele Rowe Shields, who is a member of Arts Benicia's Exhibition Committee, was instrumental in facilitating the connection with Clark. The Catherine Clark Gallery on Utah Street in San Francisco focuses on contemporary art, and has garnered praise from numerous media outlets including the New York Times.
Clark taught at the San Francisco Art Institute, and in 2006, authored an essay for and edited the monograph, Ascending Chaos: The Art of Masami Teraoka 1966-2006, published by Chronicle Books. She has lived abroad and is a member of the San Francisco Art Dealers Association and other boards, programs and associations. For the Order + Chaos exhibit, a national call for entries garnered 417 submissions from131 artists. Of those, Clark whittled it down to just 50 works from 20 artists.
Arts Benicia’s Mary Shaw says of the exhibit, “Chaos is the unformed void. Order is its antithesis. Chaos has no meaning without order. The ebb and flow between order and chaos defines the eternal struggle. The exhibition investigates the inherent paradox between order and chaos and the creativity that is part of, and issues from, that struggle.” The exhibit will run August 6-September 11.
