Watching a movie takes on a whole new dimension in an outdoor, festive setting. Something magical happens while gazing at the silver screen on a summer evening beneath the open sky with friends and loved ones. Benicia captures a bit of that magic with its regular Movie Night Under the Stars events at the Gazebo in the downtown City Park.

On July 21 at dusk, gather the family and head down to First Street and Military West for the featured movie Moana, an animated Disney film about an adventurous teenager who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. The August 18 feature is The Secret Life of Pets, a PG-rated film about the drama in the lives of mismatched family pets. Set in a Manhattan apartment building, the film shows how Max’s life as a favored pet is turned upside down when a sloppy mongrel named Duke moves in.

Movie night happens on Friday evenings, just right for unwinding after a hectic workweek. Bring a pile of pillows, a few blankets and some lawn chairs and then sit back and enjoy the movie. Food and beverages are welcome, so feel free to bring a picnic. Though the August movie is about pets, no actual pets are allowed in City Park so you will need to leave Fido at home. The city advises these are family events, so please refrain from smoking and also note that the playground closes at dusk. Free admission and free popcorn, too.
