Gracie’s Old Time Recipes: Fancy Hot Fruit Salad

We’ve all got those recipes that have been passed down for generations. In preparation for the upcoming holidays, I’m sharing one of my Aunt Evelyn’s treasured dishes. My mom and her three sisters made this every winter holiday, for decades. They argued over whether Lorna Doone’s or Walker’s were the best shortbread cookies. My Aunt Eilene put them all to shame and made her own shortbread!

Fancy Hot Fruit Salad

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Drain and mix the following fruit together and arrange in the bottom of a large casserole dish.

  • 1 – 15 ounce can dark cherries
  • 1 – 15 ounce can apricots
  • 1 – 29 ounce can sliced peaches

Mix together:

  • 1 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 3 Tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 eggs, slightly beaten

Spread on top of the mixed fruit.  Bake for 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, mix together:

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons butter
  • 2 Tablespoons flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 10 crumbled shortbread cookies (your choice!)

Remove fruit casserole from oven and sprinkle mixture over top.

Bake another 20 minutes until brown and bubbling.
