One is immediately captivated at first glance of Mary Oros’ website, where there is a gallery of her sculptures that seem to defy gravity. Working in concrete, Oros refers to her process as ‘concrete couture’ due to its labor-intensive nature. In her artist’s statement, Oros says she feels she is choreographing her pieces as she designs them in space, one movement impacting another. She adds that she “recognizes the strength and power of grace and beauty, and the need to embrace humanness before there is too much societal disconnect between heart and mind. In these times especially, I hope that viewers, when they walk around my sculptures, will simply be reminded of the heart connection within themselves.”

Of inspiration, Oros says “I just like being outside in California. The natural ruggedness inspires me, the whacky vegetation, the light, the air, the microclimates, and of course the ocean.” Oros will be participating during Arts Benicia’s huge annual event, Artist Open Studios May 6-7, 10am-5pm.
