In the final segment of our series on what’s where on First Street, we cover J Street to Military West. With an art gallery, medical practices and professional offices, including Bank of the West and Kennon Realty, these two blocks are dominated by our town’s lovely entrance: City Park and the Veteran’s Hall. City Park’s Gazebo, large trees, picnic tables, benches and historic markers beckon visitors to explore, or just sit and people-watch in the cool shade.

Fire Station 11 occupies the northeast corner, and on the southeast corner, the spectacular Playground of Dreams. Designed by Robert Leathers, this opulent wooden structure was built by hundreds of community volunteers. The playground’s many bridges, slides, swings and other unique features have been delighting children of all ages for the past 25 years.

Got Lunch Plate

There is a restaurant in this section as well: the popular Got Plate Lunch, which serves up abundant Hawaiian food to hungry diners in a casual setting. From the Kalua Pork Grilled Cheese Sandwich to the Portuguese Sausage, Eggs and Rice, the authentic menu and large outside deck draw a loyal clientele, enjoying a slice of the Islands.
