Best Western Plus Heritage Inn, Benicia has teamed up with the Clean the World campaign to help save lives of children around the world. Every day in the United States alone, 1.5 million bars of soap are discarded along with other bathroom amenities.
These unused soaps and bathroom amenities can be sanitized and distributed to millions around the world to help stop the spread of illness and death from diarrheal disease and acute respiratory infections.
Each day 9,000 children around the world die from diseases such as acute respiratory illness (pneumonia) and diarrheal disease (cholera). The most tragic part of this statistic is that up to 65% of these deaths could be prevented through simple hand washing with a bar of soap. Clean the World has a mission to put soap in the hands of people who need it most to improve hygiene and sanitation conditions to lessen the impact of disease and promote better hygiene and living conditions worldwide.
Clean the World is the largest global recycler of hotel amenities, and in just two years of operation has distributed more than 9 million bars of soap to children and families in the United States, Canada and more than 45 countries worldwide. While doing so, the organization has also fulfilled a valuable environmental mission by diverting an estimated 600 tons of hotel waste from polluting landfills in the U.S. and Canada.
An estimated one ton of soap, shampoo, conditioner and lotion are to be donated by the Best Western Heritage Inn in 2012. Not only will this effort help children around the world, but it will also help remove waste from our landfills each year.
