Napa artists Elizabeth Bush (photography) and Mark Mattioli (drawings and paintings) combine their talents to present images and impressions of Mare Island and the fascinating island of Cuba. The couple has jointly presented fine art exhibitions on these subjects throughout the Napa Valley and at the Vallejo Naval & Historical Museum.
Mare Island served as a bustling Naval Shipyard for 142 years, until being shuttered by the Federal government in 1996. On dozens of occasions since 2005, the artists have explored the strategic setting of the shipyard and ghostly presence of hundreds of abandoned buildings.
In 2014, Bush & Mattioli were fortunate to visit Cuba. As artists and Americans, they were greatly inspired by the architecture, landscapes, rich history, and friendly people encountered on this intriguing island. In addition to experiencing the urban intensity of Havana, the couple visited the lush tobacco-growing region of Vinales and the Spanish colonial city of Trinidad.
At 3:00 Sunday, April 9, Bush will present Cuba Glimpses, an engaging talk and visual presentation, at the Marilyn Citron O’Rourke Gallery at the Benicia Public Library.
