The first prize winner will be treated to dinner for two at Sailor Jacks waterfront Restaurant, along with a variety of other prizes bearing the winning slogan. Frank, the owner, encourages you to be creative, use your imagination and capture what Benicia means to you in a slogan. 11/10/12Phil Joy House Moves Again: Image Recreated on Southampton HomeBenicia’s travelling Victorian house can be spotted in yet another Benicia locale. Little did homeowners Monique and Jim Moench know when they commissioned a mural from local artist Mernie Buchanan that Phil Joy’s Queen Anne would inspire the transformation of the back of the couple’s Southhampton home and garden. The couple had asked Buchanan to paint low-maintenance landscaping, a bougainvillea mural they could enjoy from their hot tub. Said Monique Moench, “The back of our house was always so blah . . . Many nights my husband and I would sit in the hot tub, and various lights would cast tree shadows on the house giving me the idea of wanting to have a garden-type design painted (there).” Buchanan asked if they were game to take this... 11/06/12USS Olympia Historic Ship Clears Another Hurdle To Return To VallejoUSS OLYMPIA completed another major milestone leading to her first passage through San Francisco’s Golden Gate in 117 years. On November 1, 2012 the Mare Island Historic Park Foundation’s (MIHPF) submitted a Phase II Application interim report on the effort to acquire the USS OLYMPIA for display in Dry-Dock #1 at Mare Island in Vallejo, California. The report identifies that despite the fact that the MIHFP has demonstrated the viability of the display in terms of facilities, cash flow and operational capability; however, fundraising to capitalize the effort requires improvement. The OLYMPIA is the oldest surviving steel hulled warship in the world and when war broke out with Spain in 1898 she and the ships she led were all that stood between our pacific... 10/30/12William Harsh, Beloved Benicia Artist and Teacher, Dies Peacefully at HomeDear friends, As many of you know, Benicia’s beloved artist and teacher Bill Harsh passed away peacefully at his home on the evening of Saturday, October 27. His family thanks you for the outpouring of your love and support during his illness, and during this difficult time of loss. In the final phase of his life, Bill was also deeply moved by the show of love and support from the community. An obituary will be published soon. In a collaborative effort between the Vessel Gallery in Oakland and Gallery621 in Benicia, a fund has been established to facilitate the acquisition of a select few of Bill’s works by local and regional museums where his paintings can be shown and conserved in perpetuity.
